- The town of St. Elmo, Tennessee, located south of Chattanooga at the base of Lookout Mountain, began as Kirkland. In 1888, the post office changed its name to St. Elmo, after a popular novel by August Evans which was set around Kirkland. St. Elmo was incorporated in 1905. It became part of the city of Chattanooga when it was annexed in September 1929.
