Sturges. Born Eliza N. Atherton, Aunt Lizzie Aiken originally came from the newly formed West, but her duties as a Civil War nurse took her to Memphis, Tennessee where she worked at Ovington Hospital caring for federal soldiers. Before that, she worked with the 6th Illinois Cavalry near Peoria as a nurse and missionary; in 1865, she went to Chicago to perform more missionary work.
