Jane Portrait of Jane, a woman enslaved by the James A. Whiteside family, circa 1859-1860. Photograph was collected by Penelope Johnson Allen in the course of her research on the Whiteside Family. Allen published this photograph in her book, "Genealogy of a branch of the Johnson Family and connections" (1982), with the following caption: "Whiteside family slave, Jane, the family nurse who took care of all the Whiteside babies. From a daguerreotype (1859-60) made in Chattanooga, Tenn. Owned by Miss Florence Whiteside (1910)." The photo is stamped "Judd, 828 Market Street"; and was likely reproduced by the studio of A. W. Judd sometime between 1897-1910.
