- John McLeod Keating came to the United States in 1848. He apprenticed in the printer's trade in Scotland and worked for New York newspapers before moving to Memphis, Tennessee in 1858. In 1868, he became managing editor of the Memphis Appeal. He wrote a history of the yellow fever epidemic in 1879, History of the Yellow Fever, and issued a report on sanitation. He held memberships in historical and fraternal organizations and maintained a large book collection. He died in 1906 in Massachusetts.
